About the Legal Aid Cell
The Legal Aid Cell at Stanford School of Law works to ensure access to justice for underprivileged and marginalised communities by providing free legal assistance, conducting legal awareness programs, and organising outreach initiatives. It also serves as a practical training platform where students develop essential skills such as client counselling, legal drafting, and problem-solving while engaging with real-life legal issues. The establishment of such cells is mandated by the Bar Council of India, which requires every law college in India to set up legal aid clinics as part of legal education. This is further supported by the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which emphasises free legal services as a means to ensure justice for all, especially the weaker sections of society, and is encouraged by the University Grants Commission as part of extension and community engagement activities. Thus, the Legal Aid Cell plays a crucial role in both serving society and shaping socially responsible, practice-ready legal professionals.
